Decorating for Fall: Eight Colorful Ideas for Your Senior Living Home

Take a walk on a crisp fall afternoon and you’ll be reminded why the season is such a favorite. The good news is you don’t need to leave those brilliant colors behind when you return home. Instead, bring the best of fall inside your senior living home so you can enjoy nature’s textures, scents and hues all season long!

Eight Fall Decorating Tips

If you could use a few ideas to introduce the style of the season to your apartment or cottage in a senior living community, consider these tips when decorating for fall.

  1. Start at your front door

Say “Welcome home!” to your guests (and yourself) with a festive fall wreath. Look to the outdoors for inspiration.

Starting with an olive branch or grapevine wreath, add in layers of leaves and dried wheat. Pinecones add texture and slipping in a few faux apples or tiny gourds add just the right touch of color.

Check with a senior living community team member about the best way to hang and display your creation.
  2. Create your own cozy hideaway

Is there anything more inviting than a comfy throw draped over a favorite reading chair? With the right lighting, you may find it hard to put down your book, crossword puzzle or photo album.

Nothing says fall like plaid, and you have almost endless choices when mixing and matching traditional seasonal colors.

Display your favorites with a blanket and pillow. For an added accent, try a patterned lamp shade to complete the look.
  3. Add hints of fall throughout your home

Gather your baskets, bowls and jars and let your imagination wander with grasses, pinecones and flowers placed throughout your rooms.

Create groupings that include scented oil diffusers, wax warmers, or flameless candles (if your senior living community allows them).

Consider changing out a few photos into more rustic or fall colored frames. You can also switch out a few with pressed leaves against a white background for a temporary, seasonal look.
  4. You can never have too many pumpkins

Pumpkins are an unofficial symbol of fall. Orange is a traditional color but consider including a group of white ones nestled between white flowers.

Take a walk around your senior living community campus to collect beautiful fall leaves and decoupage them onto your white pumpkins and gourds to create a stunning look.

Craft a seasonal message or single word with vinyl letters on a larger pumpkin to create a point of interest.
  5. Create the perfect fall centerpiece for your table

Create a centerpiece that your guests will notice as you welcome everyone to gather around and share a meal.

It’s easy to fashion a mix of miniature pumpkins, gourds and dried seed pods. Add in your favorite silk flowers and tuck in a few faux apples and pears.

Orange, red or gold candles among vases or bowls filled with nature’s bounty can create the perfect look.
  6. Bring in touches of texture

Switching out your lightweight summer materials and colors for heavier textures and the deep hues of fall leave no doubt that the season has indeed changed.

Autumnal décor seems to invite you and your guests to stop and linger a while longer - choose items that can be touched as well as seen.

The rich colors of plaid can make your decorating even easier. Add a bright bold swath as a table runner or opt for placemats or napkins in plaid patterns.
  7. Create a focal point

A focal point is the area of your home that draws your guests’ eyes when they first enter. An entry table or side table is a great space to decorate.

Show your love of the season with faux and fresh pumpkins of all sizes, candles wrapped with greenery and placed in glass holders, and vases filled with your favorite fall flowers.
  8. Complete the perfect room for slumber

As the days grow shorter and the nights begin to cool, fall is the perfect time to change out your lighter bedding for the cozier materials of fall.

A comforter in darker colors or plaid creates an inviting bed to climb into at the end of a busy day.

Add seasonal touches in the room, including a fall flower arrangement on your bedside table or a small bowl of scented pinecones.
